Nutrition Counseling/Weight Management
Did you know that many of our pets in the United States suffer from being overweight? A survey in 2023 by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found that 59% of dogs and 61% of cats are overweight or obese! (1) Some studies have even suggested these numbers are even higher and rising each year (2). Excessive body weight has been linked to increased risk of
diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, pancreatitis, cruciate ligament tears, oral disease, and even
certain types of cancer (3).
Nutrition is a fundamental piece in improving our pets’ quality of life and longevity. Proper nutritional management ensures our pets maintain a healthy weight and reduce their risk of developing disease. Pets’ nutritional needs change as they grow older or if their health status changes. Proper nutrition is often a key part of managing chronic illnesses and maintaining the overall well-being of our beloved family members. A balanced wellness plan includes nutritional assessment along with recommended vaccinations and preventatives. At Brunswick Veterinary Hospital, we are devoted to all aspects of patient care, especially ensuring our pets receive the proper nutrition to be happier and healthier! We provide nutrition counseling for overweight/obese pets, and those suffering from chronic illness, and we can help navigate the complicated world of pet food and nutrition.
