What is dog acupuncture?
Dog acupuncture involves the use of very fine sterile needles inserted at very specific points in a dog's body. The goal is to help the dog function better by relieving pain, reducing inflammation, or helping with various other conditions like diabetes and ear infections.

Is there more than one type of dog acupuncture?
Yes, there are a few types of acupuncture, including Chinese, Korean, and Japanese acupuncture. However, those of us in this country who are trained in canine acupuncture typically practice Chinese acupuncture.
What is moxibustion, and why is it considered part of acupuncture therapy?
Moxibustion is an old technique from China. It involves burning small amounts of an herb called moxa to safely introduce some heat to the acupuncture needles. It can be especially helpful for older patients, particularly those with arthritis that worsens in the cold.
How does the use of acupuncture impact the health and well-being of a dog?
The goal of acupuncture is to balance the entire animal, not only to relieve various painful or inflammatory conditions. This holistic approach makes our treatments very effective.
How old does a dog need to be to receive acupuncture?
There's no age limit for acupuncture. I have treated dogs ranging from puppies to those in their advanced years.
What conditions can be treated with dog acupuncture?
Acupuncture can be used to treat many conditions, including pain, injured backs, injured necks, and arthritic joints. It is particularly beneficial for athletic and working dogs with soft tissue injuries.
Can acupuncture be used for allergies, asthma, and GI issues in dogs?
While acupuncture shines in treating more chronic conditions, it may not be as effective for acute conditions. Often, a balance between Western and Eastern medicine is the most effective approach.
Can acupuncture complement my dog's current treatments?
Acupuncture can certainly complement Western treatments. Many of my patients receive a mix of acupuncture and Western medications.
