Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine
Sometimes, standard medical treatments may not be an option for some patients due to age, other illnesses or important medications. Or, perhaps a patient has exhausted Western medical options and is looking for a different approach to chronic disease management. For many conditions, such as certain types of back pain or lameness, acupuncture is now considered a first line treatment for pain relief. For these cases and many others, owners may benefit from an integrative approach to their pets’ cases that combines Western and traditional Chinese approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
Traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) involves the use of acupuncture, herbal formulas and diet to relieve symptoms of disease and promote overall animal health. This system of medical study and treatment has been developed, practiced and refined for hundreds of years, and has gained widespread acceptance all over the world. Today, many veterinarians have trained in these traditional medical arts as well as modern Western medicine, and use tools from both traditions to best help their patients.
At BVH, Dr. Heather Burrowes is available to consult with clients for either integrative case management or supplemental acupuncture and herbal therapy (if a client prefers to remain with their regular veterinarian for primary care). Dr. Burrowes certified in acupuncture at Chi University in Redding, FL in 2019, and has pursued additional TCVM studies since.
