Veterinarian
Born and raised in Ballston Spa, NY, Dr. Ryan Sherwood fell in love with veterinary medicine when he was five years old and listened to his cat’s heartbeat through a stethoscope. Another Capital District veterinarian fostered this love throughout his childhood by engaging Dr. Sherwood during regular health check-ups, hosting him in high school as an intern, and later serving as one of his externship mentors during his fourth year of veterinary school.
Dr. Sherwood knew that the road to becoming a skilled veterinarian required walking in many shoes. He spent a year working the front desk of a vet office as a Client Service Representative before graduating with his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from SUNY Fredonia. Working with beagles and other laboratory animals, Dr. Sherwood continued his path by becoming licensed as a Veterinary Technician from Medaille College in Buffalo, NY. Recommendations from his professors allowed him to be immediately accepted to veterinary school in Guelph, Ontario, and Dr. Sherwood graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2018. Gaining experience as a receptionist, tech, and doctor has helped him connect with clinic staff and patients. Looking for a culture where he could both spend more intentional time addressing client concerns and work with a warm and friendly team, Dr. Sherwood joined Brunswick Veterinary Hospital in 2022.
Dr. Sherwood is active in the following veterinary associations: New York State Veterinary Medical Society (NYSVMS), Capital District Veterinary Medical Society (CDVMS) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).
As a veterinary practitioner, Dr. Sherwood’s top priority is clear communication with clients so they know all of their options when their pets are in his care. He specializes in wellness visits for dogs and cats, has a particular interest in surgery, cardiology and shares compassion with owners managing end of life care. He has seen first-hand with his cat, Cairo, that daily maintenance can extend the quality of life for pets with chronic illnesses.
In his free time, Dr. Sherwood enjoys hiking, running and playing games with his wife, landscape painting and video games. He and his wife are working towards becoming a member of the Adirondack 46ers by hiking all 46 Adirondack High Peaks. They share their house with two black cats – Eevee and Keira.
